Apps For Refugees
“Women who have little knowledge of the outside world, now must find their way around it in the dark while gripping the hands of their trusting children. They have travelled far and wide to escape the dangers of their own country. They’ve experienced trauma and heartbreak during the lives they lived before, on the treacherous journey to safer skies, and even after they’ve found a new place to settle down.
Seven year old girl Amal Hussain died from malnourishment in a refugee camp in Yemen, just four miles from a hospital. A 9-year-old Syrian refugee commit suicide in Canada, after she was bullied endlessly in school. And of course, the death of 3 year old Alan Kurdi pierced the hearts of an entire nation when photos of his tiny body washed up on a Turkish beach went viral.
Stories like these have sparked an outpour of humanitarian aid- including from the tech sector, which wanted to prevent the next Amal from starving and Alan from drowning. Armed with the knowledge that many refugees have access to cell phones, people started developing apps that might guide refugees and migrants on their journeys and help navigate their way in a new world. The emerging technology tools promise to take the place of translators, doctors, and lawyers. They reconnect loved ones, establish a legal identity in new countries, and help refugees gather critical information. Here are just a few of the Apps, new and old, that have changed the game for the better.” (TECH4WOMEN).
